‘It’s 50-50’: Zim tempts Mushekwi out of international retirement for crucial Bafana, Lesotho World Cup qualifiers

HARARE – Prolific striker Nyasha Mushekwi has communicated that he will “think about” coming out of international retirement to play for Zimbabwe in two crucial World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and South Africa this June.

36-year-old Mushekwi is being courted by his country to play in the two ties, with interim Warriors technical advisor Sunday Chidzambwa – a great admirer of the former Mamelodi Sundowns hitman – acting on behalf of Zimbabwe’s FA.

Mushekwi has been scoring freely for Yunnan Yukun, a Chinese second tier club, prompting interest from home for the two June qualifiers in South Africa.

There has been concern over Zimbabwe’s frontline prowess for the two matches. Nantes forward Tino Kadewere, who is the most prominent attacker in the 23-man squad announced this week, doesn’t have an impressive scoring record in the colours of his national team.

“It’s 50-50 chances that Nyasha will play in those two games,” a well-placed source told SportsCast on Saturday.

“He was approached, via Mhofu (Chidzambwa), and he said he was seriously thinking about it.”

Mushekwi is expected to make a decision in the next two days ahead of the first match against Lesotho on 7 June at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Warriors, under caretaker coach Jairos Tapera, will then take on South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on 11 June in Bloemfontein.
