HARARE – Veteran Zimbabwean cricket administrator Nick Chouhan has been appointed by Grassroots Cricket as a representative for the African region.

Grassroots Cricket, founded by Australia-based Zimbabwean enthusiast Tawanda Karasa, is an ambitious undertaking established for the purpose of growing the game at developmental level.

Having initially targeted his homeland, Karasa’s brainchild is now spreading its wings across Africa – where cricket has grown in leaps and bounds over the past decade – and beyond the continent.

Chouhan, an ex-Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) director for development, now has the big task of “spreading awareness and the goals of Grassroots Cricket to cricketing nations across Africa,” said a statement on Wednesday.

“Grassroots Cricket is a fundamental initiative aimed at nurturing cricket at its most foundational level,” it reads.

“It’s about fostering a love for the game from the ground up, emphasising inclusivity, skill development, and community engagement. Supported by the Australian Embassy, Grassroots Cricket embodies principles of fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The programme, already successfully running in Australia and South Africa, serves as a model for cricket development worldwide. By introducing Grassroots Cricket to cricket-playing nations in Africa and beyond, our aim is to empower young players, build strong cricketing communities, and contribute to the global growth of the game.”
